READ - Rural Economic Activity Development
The Rural Economic Development program - (2008-2012) - aims to promote economic growth and participation by improving selected value chains and basic business literacy in the area of Aceh Tamiang.
The project is supported by Cordaid (the Netherlands). It works closely with partner institutions, NGOs, and business consultants-all in the local level.
Project activities include:
- Identifying economic opportunities in Aceh Tamiang
- Improving business literacy of the target group so as to be able to participate in economic activities
- Strengthening the role of the local actors as producers, employers, and consumers in selected value chains
Highlights in 2011:
- 1’546 farmers from 28 villages in 6 sub-districts receive direct training on rubber GAP
- At least 874 farmers enjoy 20 – 60% income increase by following project approach
- 6 village rubber nurseries are established and accessible to at least 1’200 farmers and expected to provide 60’000 – 100’000 new rubber trees per year in the next 5 – 10 years
- 2’927 women and 1’306 men benefited from financial literacy training
- 38 trainers from local government, innovator farmers and local organizations have adopted training technique in rubber and financial literacy
