LED NTT - Local Economic Development in Nusa Tenggara Timur
The Local Economic Development project in Nusa Tenggara Timur Province (LED-NTT) - 2005-2008 - applies an integrated approach to local economic areas in Flores and Alor island. Its activities include facilitating a conducive business environment, sector development, access to finance and access to information.
The project is co-financed by Swisscontact and Cordaid (the Netherlands). It partners with the local and provincial government, local media, farmers and traders, loan cooperatives and NGOs.
Project activities include:
- Improving value added for farmers in the cashew, cacao and seaweed sector through organic certification and local processing
- Improving a conductive business environment is Sikka, East Flores and Ngada district through One-Stop-Services for business licanses and Regulatory Impact Assessment
- Supporting local media in increasing business content
- Improving access for smallholders and MSMEs to alternative sources and schemes of finanching
Highlights in 2008:
- Four farmer groups now produce 350 tons of organic cashews per year 1,000 farmers have continued practicing organic farming
- Two local organic cashew processing units were certified and had access to local and export market. The production capacity amounted to 3 tons per year and 150 woman were employed
- Four cocoa demonstration plot has been maintained and this has taught 1,500 farmers in applying a better technological farming practices to increase productivity
- In Alor, seaweed farming has become the main activity for 1,500 coastal households. Production have increased from 150 tons per year to 200 tons per year
- Local government in Sikka has set-up a RIA team and started reviewing local regulations relating to the sector issues
